To ensure a stable and reliable power supply system with acceptable supply quality at a reasonable and competitive cost in a de-regulated electricity market, the state-of-the-art technologies of high-power semi-conductor devices, information and communications are increasingly being utilised in the planning, design and operation of power systems. The applications of new technologies are also aimed at improving the operation of electricity production to be efficient. The development of the optimal scheduling algorithm is being pursued. The design of robust, fast-acting and high precision control systems for the Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), generators and motors are also being investigated. At the device level, efforts to model and characterise power semiconductor devices are continuing. At the circuit level, the study of power electronics-based equipment for power quality enhancement, the design of new and efficient power converters, design of wireless power transfer systems, and the development of electric drives for applications in green energy systems, electric vehicles, satellites and bio-medical implants is also been carried out.
