Additive Manufacturing Research Centre
Research at AUT’s Additive Manufacturing Research Centre investigates new materials for additive manufacturing processes and mechanisms of their consolidation. It is specifically focussing on optimisation of process variables, alternative slicing and deposition strategies, rapid casting, medical applications and metamaterials.
Staff and students are also concerned with the opportunities additive manufacturing is presenting to the manufacturing industry. Traditional barriers to product development are being overcome in terms of the design process as well as manufacturing capabilities. Working directly from CAD files and not requiring any hard tooling opens up a completely new range of possibilities for design and products.
The Centre is well equipped with machinery for the processes of selective laser sintering (SLS), fused deposition modelling (FDM), 3D printing and a number of prototype set-ups to research and develop new materials and techniques.
